"Real" = after inflation, so results are in today's dollars. 5% real is a common, moderately cautious assumption for a stock-heavy portfolio.

How it works

Your FIRE number is annual expenses × (100 ÷ withdrawal rate). Then we simulate year by year: each year your portfolio grows by the real return, and your yearly contribution is added at the end of the year. The answer is the first year the balance reaches the FIRE number.

Because we use an inflation-adjusted (real) return, everything is in today's dollars. Keep your contribution and expenses in today's dollars too. If you expect your savings to grow with raises, the real answer could be faster.

Markets don't deliver a smooth 5% every year. Treat this as a ballpark, not a release date.

Educational only, not financial advice. These are simplified estimates using constant returns. Real markets are bumpy, and taxes, fees and inflation vary.
